In ‘Babies‘ non-fiction filmmaker Thomas Balmès weaves an engaging narrative chronicling a year in the lives of four infants from four countries. Simple enough premise, but executed with great mastery, and it really feels like he did not have to try very hard. What gave me pleasure was the fact that this is a ‘silent film’, unencumbered by cinematic excesses of lensing, hyper-cutting, voice-overs and what not. Accompanied by an understated yet effective musical score by Bruno Coulais, get ready to welcome little Bayar, Hattie, Mari and Ponijao into your lives. Watch.

Must be seen by all… especially people who want to have children or even people who already have children…I relived so many beautiful moments of my daughter and me. Thank you for sharing this.

Very interesting to look at the contrasts of cultures, the African-Japanese-Mongolian-American. I looked at this as an anthropological piece. Nice.

this made me think about how priviledged we r in the developed countries, access to power, healthcare, amenities etc,,while much of the world goes without it, and still manages to bring healthy children into the world,,,a lesson for us, we don’t need so many things.
