At the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities, University of Cologne, Germany, a special emphasis lies on hermeneutic and historico-contextual models. Research topics comprise the genesis and invention of knowledge as well as processes of reception and trans-culturation and their anthropological and ethical conditions.

Starting April 1st, 2014 the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities offers twenty PhD scholarships and ten collegiate places over a period of three years and is open to international applicants. The application deadline is October 18th, 2013.

The Royal School of Library and Information Science (RSLIS), Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, invites applications for a three-year scholarship from candidates who hold a Master degree in a field relevant to the study of information. The successful applicant may either be employed in RSLIS’s division in Aalborg or Copenhagen.

The main objective of the project of this scholarship shall be to explore digitization of modern society and/or humanistic and cultural studies. RSLIS particularly encourages project proposals which also have the potential of contributing to the general objectives stated above. Project: Urban infrastructure transformation from an STS perspective: Translating visions of Smart and Sustainable Cities.

Brief: Terms such as “Smart Cities”, “Smart Infrastructures” or “Eco-Cities” are increasingly employed to describe future visions of urban development and urban infrastructures and to design related policies or research programmes at national and European level. However, the question remains how such visions are actually translated into socio-material practices of infrastructural change. Do they give rise to new actor coalitions in cities? How are they used strategically by different actor groups? How do such ideas congeal into concrete projects of infrastructural change – at the level of technology, governance, institutions and practices? The aim of this PhD project is to explore these linkages and translation processes in a very small number of case studies of Swedish cities in a comparative perspective.

PhD position: Ethnography of Northern Landscapes. Norway 2013

3 year full time PhD position on the ethnography of Northern landscapes, at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) and the Barents Institute in Kirkenes

The position is associated to the Future North project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council within its SAMKUL Program. Future North aims to map and document the current Arctic and Subarctic landscapes through experimental interactive modes of mapping.

The team includes 4 researchers from architecture, landscape, design, media, and social sciences, as well as 3 PhD fellows.

Founded on a conception of landscape as a shared human experience, the PhD project should aim to bring to the foreground the voices of Northern residents -indigenous, non-indigenous, and new-comers. Eligible PhD-proposals should aim to develop strategies for mapping the landscapes of aspirations, disappointments, and desires as the Arctic advances headlong into massive industrialization, exploration for more resources, and speculative planning.

The Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies, University of Heidelberg, Germany, invites applications for eight doctoral scholarships.

The programme offers a monthly scholarship of 1.200 Euro. It further supports scholarship holders in framing their research through advanced courses and individual supervision and mentoring. The scholarships start in the winter term 2013/14 and are granted for two years with the possibility of an extension for an additional year. Half of them are reserved for young scholars from Asia.

Joan Cuthill PhD Scholarship in Art History 2013, University of Aberdeen, UK

To commemorate its links with the visual arts in Scotland, the University of Aberdeen in collaboration with the Alumni Association of Hospitalfield House are offering the Joan Cuthill PhD Scholarship in Art History. The award will facilitate research into the twentieth century history of Hospitalfield as an art institution and its role in the evolution of Scottish visual culture.

The PhD research will draw both on the extensive archive housed at Hospitalfield and will require the candidate to conduct interviews with surviving artist alumni of the institution. The scholarship will cover full tuition fees (at home or overseas rate, as applicable) for the duration of the degree plus a contribution towards living expenses of £9000 per year.

PhD position at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, 2012-2013

PhD stipend position in Children and Media, Press or Game Industry (Science and Technology Studies) with the Mercator Research Group “Spaces of Anthropological Knowledge: Production and Transfer”, at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany.

Area of study: Cultural Psychology and Anthropological Knowledge.

Eligibility: An M.A. in media studies, social anthropology, cultural psychology, social sciences, science and technology studies or related disciplines is required. Experience and interest in qualitative methods, preferably ethnography, is necessary. Applicants must be good writers and possess empirical as well as theoretical curiosity. She or he must have the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively. Proficiency in German language is important.

CHANGE is an interdisciplinary research group that aims to push the boundaries of design and the use of digital environments in learning and communication. This research group explore design, use of and learning with technology-based environments in schools, museums and workplace settings.

Pierre Bourdieu: Sociology is a Combat Sport

‘La sociologie est un sport de combat’ was how Pierre Bourdieu stated it. My first brush with Bourdieu was through the articulation of ‘cultural capital’ and ‘symbolic violence’. It is quite a challenge to engage with the ‘Bourdieuesque’ deployment of language – complex constructions and almost a maze-like language interface. But, it is all worth the while. Apart from being a prolific ‘sociological genius’, what strikes me most is that he became, through his ‘combat sport’, an inspiration for so many movements opposed to neo-liberalism and globalisation in France and elsewhere. His legacy of social concern lives on, and the world is better for that.
